Amy has been a Moore County resident since 1997. She has been a Girl Scout leader, establishing a Brownie troop and seeing it through to Seniors, and a Cub Scout den mother.
Amy served as a parent member of the Vass-Lakeview School Improvement Team.
She has volunteered for Sandhills Farm to Table, first organizing and running the Vass Gathering Site and more recently serving on the Board of Directors.
Amy has also fostered and trained dogs as a volunteer for multiple local dog rescue organizations.
Amy taught at North Moore High School from January of 2015 until January of 2023. She taught all of the science courses offered at North Moore (Earth and Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Science). She served as a mentor, member of the School Improvement Team, and Science Department chair.
Amy has attended significant professional development on her own time every year, so that her students benefit from up-to-date teaching methods and practice in 21st century skills.
Amy is currently teaching science at Montgomery Central High School.
Amy's two children attended Vass-Lakeview Elementary, New Century Middle, Crain's Creek Middle, and Union Pines High School.
Amy volunteered in the classroom and served as a parent member of the School Improvement Team at Vass-Lakeview.
She sought formal accommodations for one child, and worked together with teachers who provided informal accommodations.
Amy was also a band parent and a hardworking volunteer for the Union Pines Marching Vikings Boosters, selling funnel cakes at all home football games for six years.
Amy earned her bachelor's degree in Religion and Chemistry from Williams College, her masters in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Chemistry from Stanford.
She completed postdoctoral research as a National Research Council Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory.
She earned the requirements for a lateral entry teaching license at Sandhills Community College, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and the University of Phoenix. She earned a perfect score on her content Praxis.
Amy has taught at the collegiate level while a graduate student at Sanford and as a faculty member at Mercer University. While at Mercer, she served as a pre-professional advisor, advising students and preparing applications to medical, dental, pharmacy, and veterinary schools, and on the committee that evaluated applications and awarded scholarships, so she is familiar with both university and professional school admissions requirements as well as the science background needed to succeed.
With her late husband, John, Amy ran Oak Hill Kennel, a local Moore County business that hired Moore County Schools students and graduates.
As a nationally-known dog trainer, Amy also acquired a good understanding of the principles of behavior.
When is the election?
Election Day for the primary is March 5, and for the general it is November 5, 2024.
